Sounds of Music in the Meadow!

Our music festival on the 2nd July, Music in the Meadow at Grange Meadow, Bletchingley, will showcase a variety of musical styles all equally exciting and entertaining, performed by some of East Surrey’s most talented musicians. Some will be known to followers of the local music scene but others may will find music they didn’t know they liked.

As a taste of what you might expect to hear, though in truth each set of performers has a repertoire that cannot be encompassed in one sound clip, following are some sound files and videos to give a flavour of the performances. These are all artists at their best performing live and to hear them live in action will be a real treat.

The event opens with a songwriter’s showcase where six local artists each will perform one of their own compositions. Listen to the sound files we have below for some of these musicians.

Penny Brooks moved to Reigate some 10 years ago immersing herself in songwriting. She was a regional finalist at Open Mic UK. Penny has a versatile style and a great voice. Here she sings a cover of Womack & Womack’s ‘Teardrops’

Paul Webb will be familiar to those who have attended our previous events as he has entertained the audience prior to our Comedy Night and also provided the live soundtrack as Uncle Stubble 2 created a unique piece of art work at our recent Art Exhibition. Here, with his band the Cellmates. he performs a cover of Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’.

Graham Powell is a musician seen regularly playing in local venues. With a clever mixture of covers and original tunes he has entertained audiences far and wide. Many may have seen and heard him, together with Jimmy van Lin, playing at our recent Art in the Pavilion exhibition. Graham has composed this original tune, Down to Barcelona.

The Penny Drops are an acoustic duo from Surrey. They perform, in their own unique style, covers with a distinct sound of their own. They will perform the opening set at Music in the Meadow following the Songwriter’s Showcase. You can hear the Penny Drops put their own twist on Dylan’s ‘Don’t think twice it’s alright’ in the video below and hear more tunes on their website here.

The Breathe Band are one of East Surrey’s most exciting groups playing their own unique blend of hyperfolk and indiefolk music. Playing mostly original tunes they display great energy and musical invention in their live shows. The video below is one of their own recordings an exhilarating performance of their own song ‘Gravity’.

Tim Hain with his band, Lose the Blues, is a guitar legend and one of East Surrey’s finest musicians. Acknowledged as the creator of Bleggae, a unique fusion of blues and reggae, he is a performer of international renown. He has recorded a number of albums and is currently working with Chris Kimsley the prominent producer of seven Rolling Stones albums and others such as Peter Frampton, Jimmy Cliff and Peter Tosh. The video below plays homage to the great Freddie Mercury whom the band actually sacked early in his remarkable career! This very Queen style song tells the story.

All these soundfiles are just a mere taster of what you might expect to hear at Music in the Meadow but their repertoires are much wider than this very limited showcase of their talents. You will enjoy their live performances much more - and the kids will love it too!
